1/1/18 - New Year challenge

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!  2017 has been amazing--especially this last week!!

I got a call from 2 of my recent converts, Angelica and Letìcia, from Faro and they said they were in Mem Martins for the day and wanted to talk to us! We had the best conversation with them! They are doing so well and progressing so much in the church!! They are serving in Young Women’s as councilors and already earned their Young Woman Recognition Award and are doing an hour of gospel study every day! I am so proud of them!! It was a huge blessing to see and talk to them!

This week we had a special baptism. The other elders were teaching Cassia and she is paralyzed and uses a wheel chair so all 4 of us baptized her and it was great! We are still waiting for the papers for the marriage of Nilton and Paula, hopefully we can get them next week. Nelson and his family are returning from Angola in 5 days and I am so excited to meet his family and start teaching them.

I had a really cool experience on Sunday night after our weekly meeting with President Tavares. I was talking to him about how when I return home I want to keep the same spirit of joy that I feel as a missionary. On my mission I’ve learned so many things that will change my life but if I come home and go back to who I was—what a waste!  After I explained he gave me a lot of counsel and I’d like to share 2 of them.  He said the reason missionaries are so happy is because they are in the service of others or like King Benjamin said, "When you are in the service of your fellowman, you are in the service of your God." He told me that every week I should have a challenge to look for 1 or 2 people who I can help... really render service.  He promised if I did that I’d be able to keep the spirit with me. Next he said that EVERY DAY I needed to study the Book of Mormon for 15 minutes at least. He said, “I don’t care if it’s your wedding day, you are traveling, or you have lots of tests, you always need to study 15 minutes in the Book of Mormon to have the direction of spirit.”  So as it is a new year and a time to make goals or resolutions I would like to give you—my family and friends--this challenge of reading the Book of Mormon for 15 minutes a day and looking for someone to serve each week....truly searching to help someone.

After my conversation with President on Sunday I was reading in 1 Nephi chapter 6 where Nephi is talking about his intent of writing the Book of Mormon.  In verse 4-5 he says, “For the fulness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and be saved. Wherefore, the things which are pleasing unto the world I do not write, but the things which are pleasing unto God and unto those who are not of the world.” If we focus on the Book of Mormon and what is taught in it we will please God and find more peace and love in our lives.

Today for p-day we ate lunch with the Tavares family then went on a hike to a beach with the other elders. It was sweet! Tonight we are road tripping to the Algarve to do some workshops! Love you all!
