9/26/16 - Enjoying the work

PORTUGAL!!! Wow, I love it here! This week was crazy and a lot happened but it went by so quickly! I learned so much and truly did witness miracles! I am pretty sure every person in this country knows I am Americano because whenever I say, "Hello, good morning," in Portuguese on the streets I get a very recited, "Hello, how are you," in some very bad English... haha but it makes me laugh so it’s okay! Another thing that I learned is that gypsies DO NOT like missionaries. One night we were walking through their neighborhood to get to our casa and we saw 4 ten and eleven year olds playing oujia boards and SMOKING in front of their parents. We couldn’t believe their parents just watched! Another time we were walking through and this little gypsy boy came up to us and said, "I wish I had a pistol so I could shoot you in the face," and then just ran off. I love the gypsies even though they don’t love us. Another thing I learned is that there are 3 different types of Portuguese, 1. Brazilian Portuguese 2. Young people’s Portugal Portuguese and 3. Old people’s Portuguese. Brazilian is the easiest to understand, next easiest is young people Portuguese which is very clear and understandable. Then there is old person Portuguese where I have NO idea what they are saying. They don’t have teeth and it sounds like they have peanut butter in their mouths--hopefully I can understand the older generation soon!

I love the PASTRIES here, holy cow I can get enough of the pastels da nata! I also love how there are soccer courts everywhere! Every time I see people playing soccer I want to play so bad but I can’t because there is a mission rule that you can’t play contact sports! Another thing I really love here are all the Africans. They are either from Cape Verde, Angola, or Mozambique!! In general they are so kind, open to everything, and so outgoing!

I think the language is coming along! We had zone conference this week and I had to bear my testimony and I don’t even know what happened. I was just speaking from the heart in Portuguese and it went really well! A lot of missionaries came up and said I am learning Portuguese fast! I also had an interview this week with President Tavares and he is the BEST! He said the same thing about my language which really boosted my confidence for the field and street contacts!  It’s good to have others perspective instead of just my point of view.

I am really learning to love personal study in the morning. I read the end of Mosiah this week in the Book of Mormon and love the story of Alma the younger! The thing I got out of it was that no matter what you have done or how deep your sins are--you can always change through the atonement! I also learned that we have to be constantly working to bring souls unto Christ, mission or no mission. My mission quote is from Parley P. Pratt, "I have all eternity to enjoy myself, as for now, Get to work!"

Last week I was feeling discouraged because we were working so hard and getting no results and the language was difficult.  My family gave me great advice telling me to enjoy “doing the work" and the rest will all come! So I looked at this week with a different attitude and really tried to "have fun doing the work". Whenever we would get yelled at or a door slammed in our face, my comp and I would look at each other and say, "He wasn’t ready anyways!" and laugh and go to the next door! The Portuguese people are rather closed off, opinionated, and blunt. They are hard to love at first but I have learned that the easiest way to love someone is to serve them! By serving and thinking of them 24/7 I am really starting to love these people so much! I know that my job is to love them and then the Lord can work miracles. For example, this week we had zero lessons, they all fell through and it was really hard. I had to remember to keep a good attitude. On Sunday during lunch we got a call from a member in the ward saying that her boyfriend wanted to hear a lesson. I saw her boyfriend at church the last 2 weeks and thought he was a member. We went over there and at the beginning I said, "I know my Portuguese isn’t good but I want to speak when I get prompted by the Spirit even though it might not sound good, so bear with me!" We had such a great lesson and at the end he said he wanted to get baptized!!!!! Out of nowhere! So my very first lesson I got a commitment for a baptismal date! Crazy how the Lord works! I want to work even harder now!

I love this gospel and missionary work so much!  Have a great week! Fica Bem!

9/19/16 - Miratejo, Portugal!!!!

Well I am here in the beautiful country of Portugal!! To be 100% honest on the flight to Portugal I was very nervous and thinking, "What am I doing!" We stopped in Paris and my worry increased as we traveled but once I saw the city of Lisbon from my window seat on the airplane my nerves went away and I knew this was where I needed to be!  Lisbon is probably the prettiest city I have ever seen! There are cobble stone streets and tall white buildings with red rooftops, AHHH it’s amazing! We went to the mission home and I really lucked out with my mission president. He and Sister Tavares are so loving, even though they don’t speak English and we could hardly understand them we felt their love. The mission home is right on the edge of Lisbon and near the ocean overlooking the bridge and statue of Jesus Christ! We had this big meal with President Tavares and we talked to the office missionaries. They were telling us how much they love this mission and I got so excited! We slept the night in the mission home and were assigned our trainers and areas the next day! We went to the church where I met my trainer, Elder Souza, who is a Brazilian and sooooo awesome! He is a big guy that is way funny and is so amazing! My first area is Miratejo! It is across the bay from Lisbon.

Lisbon looks like a mixture of Italy and San Francisco, it is seriously so pretty. Miratejo, on the other hand, is a mix between Italy, San Fran, and South America as it is more ghetto. There are lots of gypsies and no one here has houses, they all live in tall apartment buildings. Also people don’t have dryers so everywhere there are clothes hanging to dry which makes everything so colorful! The cobble stone is everywhere and hurts your feet but looks so cool. The people here are very diverse--there is no dominant race! Also the girls here are so beautiful, it’s hard not to notice.  The younger generation seems to be all about fashion but the older generation does not seem to care about appearance and many have lost their teeth.  They speak so fast and so differently! Brazilian Portuguese sounds clear and kind of like Spanish where Portugal Portuguese sounds like French and Italian and people look to be in an argument but that is just how they talk! They also have little cars and they will park ANYWHERE, even the sidewalk or middle of the street!

One thing I notice about this mission is that all of the missionaries have so much energy and fun!! But the part I LOVE is that this mission prides itself on being an OBEDIENT mission! For example, you cannot speak English at all, even in your house! It has been really hard to adapt to no English especially when I love to talk. I feel inadequate at times when I want to express my feeling to help someone out and cant because I don’t know how....Please pray for me this week to get better at the language.

Our area Miratejo is big! It has a couple of cities in it and it’s just us and two other missionaries working here. We got to the apartment and there was a note saying, “No investigators right now... go to work.”  So that’s what we did! We contact people in 2 ways, first in the street where everyone says..."eu sou catholica" or "Nao tempo eu tenho trabalhar". The next way we talk to people is in the apartment buildings but the challenge is to get someone inside the building to unlock the door--we need just one person to let us in.  Usually people say no, but my smart comp says, "I forgot my keys can you unlock it for us?"  When they do, we head up to the top of the building and then work our way down knocking on every door with most telling us to go away.

We have been here for 5 days and only taught one lesson, I can see how missionaries get discouraged with the lack of progress. One day I was telling my comp this and he told me to just keep smiling and have a good attitude and miracles will happen. Twenty minutes later someone said they would like to meet back for an appointment! It was crazy!! Then when we schedule an appointment, prepare and walk for like 20 minutes to the apartment and they don’t even answer, it’s so frustrating! I just got to keep faith and have patience. So right now we don’t have any new investigators.

Something I love about Miratejo is the members here are amazing--like 60 or 70 STRONG ACTIVE members! This Sunday I had to bear my testimony in Portuguese and it was so hard but I survived and made everyone laugh by saying from the pulpit, "I know I am not good at Portuguese."  I truly do love the members and they have increased my faith so much by watching their sacrifices like just coming to church. I think of my home where I could walk to my church building. The church here is really cool, it is between 2 big apartment buildings and has 3 stories. The members feed us Sunday lunch and dinner and wow....I never want to come back because the food here is so great!! I love the bakery where they have, “pastel de nata”.   I know they will have those in heaven! haha

Some funny things this week were 1)my comp pulling me away in the nick of time to save me when I stepped in front of an oncoming train, and 2)throwing up  because I have a weird cough which doesn’t hurt and then looking at my comp and bursting into laughter.

This is hard and frustrating work but man I love it here and love the people of Portugal. My address for mail is:

9/12/16 - Last week in the MTC

Well it’s here! This week has gone by so fast, which I did not think would happen. It kept hitting me that this time next week I’ll be living in Portugal.  I realized that I was going through the same cycle over and over again. First, excited, happy, ready to go, next, feeling overwhelmed and nervous, then realizing how much I love the MTC and don’t want to leave, and lastly, understanding how much better the field will be than the MTC. Then the cycle would start again and go round and round. But finally I have decided to just focus on the part of the cycle that is excited, happy, and ready to go!

This last week we learned all about subjunctive in Portuguese, talk about trying to scare a missionary before they leave....SUBJUNCTIVE IS HARD, and English doesn’t have it so it’s difficult to really understand. But it’s all good, the Lord is on our side. It was sad closing up our fake investigators this week. Even though they were fake, I truly did love them and pray for them and think about them all the time. My teachers, Irmao Machado, and Irmao Sears have been such a blessing in my life. They have taught me so much and I will miss them a whole lot. Machado said that when I am married that I can go down to Brazil and stay with his family whenever. Looks like I know where the "go to trip” is. The last day of class they just showed pictures and told stories of their missions and it got me so excited to go serve!

I love and will miss my zone so much. We were the smallest zone with only 26 people, and we have grown so close to each other! We can just talk about anything for hours... I have been so grateful for my zone.

I was spiritually blessed this week with not 1 but 2 APOSTLES (Elder Russel Ballard and Elder Todd Christofferson) Something I have noticed is that when they bear testimony of Christ it’s so powerful and real. We sing “Called to Serve” like every day so it kind of lost its hype, but when we sang it for Elder Christofferson is was like we were his army and he was our leader going into war and it got me so pumped!  Another thing that has changed my life this week was reading the Ricciardi Letters (IF YOU HAVE NOT READ IT GO READ IT NOW). It changed my whole perspective of a mission!! Something that he said that hit me really hard was, "To find yourself, you have to lose yourself." Over the next 2 years I want to lose myself in the work in order to find myself.

I want to mention my favorite missionary, and that is Ammon, what a STUD! The way he is so humble and so dedicated to the Lord and preaches with such power is amazing! So please read ALMA 17!!

My time at the MTC is over and now it’s time for the fun to begin!! In all reality, I truly did LOVE the MTC, it’s a very special place that I will remember forever. I have learned, felt, and laughed more here than anywhere else and that is because of the Spirit and sacredness that is here. There are no outside influences from the world and I have made so many great relationships with so many great people who will change this world! I have learned to recognize, follow, and teach with the Spirit here. It’s so amazing how the Holy Ghost works through us and I can’t wait to have him work through me with the people of Portugal.  I just have to be prepared and ready to receive it. The funny thing is, if you told someone if they could volunteer to go to a closed campus with no communication with the outside world, a whole lot of rules, being in class for 9 hours out of 16 hour days, for 6 weeks they would look at you and say you are crazy.  And that is exactly what we are. We are crazy enough to leave everything behind and go help Gods children. "The field is WHITE and ready to harvest." I am so excited to share the truth and happiness of the gospel of Jesus Christ!  Elder Ballard told us yesterday that the missionaries are more ready now than ever before and that the children of God are more ready now to hear the word then ever!

I am so excited to be in Portugal even with no idea what they are saying and the frustrations and hardships of a mission. I am excited for the relationships and memories, and I am most excited to help people come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end. That is my purpose.  I am honored to represent and serve Jesus Christ, my savior and redeemer. I love this gospel and love you all! VAMOS!

9/5/16 - Changes "mudança"

If I could describe this week in one word it would be “mudanca” which means change. So first off, my zone got kicked out of our building because of renovations which is sad because we had the whole 4th floor to ourselves and it was so fun! Also, since they are trying to fit us all into empty spots they split us up. We are all in the same floor but not with each other but with random people. I've learned that on the mission you just have to go with the punches and not be upset. We have made the most out of it. For example my comp Elder Day and I moved in with 4 guys who are going to Tonga! They are really chill and fun. But man, I thought that my previous room was dirty but it wasn’t even close to these guys... haha

Another thing that was new or a change this week was that we finally received our FLIGHT PLANS!!! I was so excited when I received that letter in the mail! So Next Tuesday I will be flying out of SLC at around 5 pm to PARIS!! (I love that Portugal beat France in the Euro cup finals.) Then from Paris to Portugal, LISBON where I will be living for two years!! This next week can't come fast enough. I am so excited to share this amazing gospel with everyone!!

Next changed thing was that we got a new teacher, Brother Machado. He is from Brazil and probably the coolest man I have ever met! When I think of Brother Machado I think of the guy on the Dos XX commercials "the most interesting man in the world". Literally there is nothing this man has not done! And when he tells me stories about his mission it gives me chills! He is a very bold guy and one of the stories is that he would go and stop soccer games right in the middle, hold the ball and tell everyone to sit down and listen! He got a couple baptisms from doing that. I want to be bold like that and tell everyone about the gospel. I feel a great bond with him.

This week my goal was to obey with EXACTNESS and man there are so many blessing from obeying that way. If only I knew that before my mission (mom, sorry it took me so long to realize this).  I also want to tell you again about the Book of Mormon...WHY DO WE TAKE THIS BOOK FOR GRANTED!!! It’s so amazing and is such a blessing in our lives! I finished the books of 2 Nephi, Jacob and Mosiah this week and wow.... that is all I have to say, WOW! There are so many amazing teachings in those books, and they can change your life. A part that hit me hard was in the end of Jacob talking about the allegory of the master and the vineyard. It was confusing at first, but then I got what it was saying and how it relates to me. God is the master and we are the servants...we are here to help the vineyard grow before it’s too late. Also, I loved Mosiah and his willingness to serve and how he feels serving God is a privilege.  It is a privilege to serve a mission for him, not a sacrifice but really a privilege! I challenge all of you guys to read 2 Nephi 31 and the allegory of the master and the vineyard this week in the book of Jacob. I am so excited to serve!!! The MTC has been an amazing experience but I am ready to start!!! I love you all so much!

Boa sorte em a semana!!
